Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)

Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba star in this gorgeous, underrated 2022 film from Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller, one of the best new streaming movies to add to your watchlist this week. When a scholar of story and mythology encounters a djin, who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom, she is plagued by her own skepticism and knowledge of the risks inherent in such wishes. But as he tells her of his past lives, she begins to believe and is enchanted by him.

From the producers of V/H/S/94, Influencer is a vacation horror movie premiering on Shudder. Dianna Agron stars in this Hulu original horror film, one of the best new streaming movies you can watch this week. A woman enrolls in a clinical trial to get her biological clock ticking when she faces pressure from friends and family to have children. As she begins her treatment, it becomes clear that her desires were better left supressed.

From Black (2023)

Shudder — April 28

A new Shudder original horror film, From Black tells the story of a mother, still reeling from the disappearance of her young son five years earlier, faced with a bizarre opportunity to learn the truth about what happened and set things right. Anna Camp (True Blood, Pitch Perfect) stars in this twisted family tale, streaming exclusively on the horror-focused service.

Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)

Disney Plus returns to Neverland in this live-action adaptation of the timeless tale, from The Green Knight and Pete’s Dragon director David Lowery. Wendy Darling, a girl hoping to avoid boarding school, is whisked away to a magical world by a boy who refuses to grow up. There, she must face an evil pirate captain. Moonage Daydream (2022)

Celebrated and award-winning documentary filmmaker Brett Morgen turns his eye to prolific, influential, and world-famous pop icon David Bowie in this critically acclaimed feature film. Using never-before-seen footage and Bowie’s own archival narration, Morgen offers an illuminating portrait of a singular voice through kaleidoscopic montages and performance footage.

One of the best movies of 2020, Zola is streaming for free on Plex. The film, based on a viral Twitter thread, sees a Detroit waitress agreeing to a weekend of stripping in Florida. Instead, it became a chaotic odyssey with a deceptive friend, her unstable pimp, and her bafoon of a boyfriend.

1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed (2023)

filmmaker and comedian W. Kamau Bell explores what it means to grow up mixed-race. He talk to kids and families, including his own, in the San Francisco Bay Area. He tackles the joys, challenges, and complexities of the multiracial experience in America at a time of progress and much remaining inequity.

Both Sides of the Blade (2022)

French auteur Claire Denis directs this romantic drama starring Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon. Sara and Jean are happily married. He’s a former rugby player with a criminal past, and she’s a radio presenter. When her ex-boyfriend, an old friend of Jean’s, re-enters their lives, Sara struggles with old feelings and finds herself caught in a love triangle.

Apollo 11 (2019)

Mubi — May 5

A stunning achievement in archival documentary filmmaking, director Todd Douglas Miller’s Apollo 11 is made up of meticulously restored footage of the first manned space mission in 1969, including never-before-seen film. The film offers a rare glimpse into the historic mission that saw commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins travelling to the moon and back.

Death’s Roulette (2023)

Death’s Roulette, Colombian actor-producer Manolo Cardona’s directorial debut, is a Spanish-language Paramount Plus original film and one of the most exciting new streaming movies you can check out this week. When seven kidnapped strangers wake up in a mansion, they are forced to play a deadly game. They have one hour to choose one among them who will die willingly. If they fail to choose, they will all forfeit their lives. As the clock winds down and secrets come to light, they slowly come to realize they may all be connected.

The Fabelmans (2022)

Showtime — May 11

The Academy Award-nominated The Fabelmans is available to stream on Showtime this week. Director Steven Spielberg turns his camera onto his own life and upbringing in this fictionalized autobiographical drama. Young Sam Fabelman falls in love with the movies and begins making motion pictures of his own. Soon, he is chronicling his own family’s domestic troubles, experiencing them through the magic and control afforded by his film equipment.

When a Nike employee sets out to revive a stagnant brand, he pursues rookie basketballer Michael Jordan to tie his new product, eventually named the Air Jordan, to the rising star, changing the world of sports and pop culture forever in one of the best new streaming movies to check out this week.

Just in time for the release of Fast X, you can revisit the latest title in the Fast and Furious franchise on Peacock. Dom and the fast family are all now living quiet lives, seeking to put the past behind them. The Last Unicorn (1982)

An animated classic, The Last Unicorn is a stunning, dark, and enchanting fantasy epic. When a dark wizard sets out to rid the world of unicorns, one such mystical creature leaves the safety of her forest home and sets out, with a young and clumsy sorcerer, to save her kind and defeat the evil King Haggard. The film features voice performances by Mia Farrow, Christopher Lee, Alan Arkin, and more.

The Mother (2023)

Netflix — May 12

A military-trained assassin must come out of hiding when the daughter she’s never met lands in the cross-hairs of ruthless criminals seeking revenge. Pop sensation Jennifer Lopez stars alongside Joseph Fiennes and Gael García Bernal in this Netflix original actioner, one of the most exciting new streaming movies to check out this week.

Saint Omer (2022)

Hulu — May 12

One of the most critically acclaimed films of 2022, French indie Saint Omer has its streaming debut on Hulu. Rama is a novelist who decides to attend the trial of a woman accused of killing her 15-month-old child. Soon, testimony from the mother and witnesses shakes her beliefs and assumptions about the case and the nature of justice.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Disney Plus — May 12

You can check out this 2017 Spider-Man outing as one of the best new streaming movies of the week. Tom Holland stars as the iconic web-slinger. Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Peter tries to balance his life as a high schooler and as a masked hero with the help of his mentor Tony Stark. While the live-action Spider-Man films have been conspicuously absent from Disney Plus due to a distribution deal with Sony, the first MCU Spidey film joins the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield films in its debut on the Disney streamer.

Unbreakable (2000)

Quite possibly M. Night Shyamalan’s best film, Unbreakable sees the Sixth Sense director reuniting with Bruce Willis for an intimate superhero origin story. Willis plays a man who has survived impossible odds. Approached by a man cursed with brittle bones who believes the two are intrinsically connected, he has to explore the possibility that he is invulnerable.

Pearl (2022)

Showtime — May 16

A surprise follow-up to 2022’s X, Pearl is a prequel shot covertly and concurrently by director Ti West. It stars Mia Goth as a young woman in 1918 who dreams of becoming a star to escape her parents’ farm. Instead, she slowly succumbs to madness.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)

Hulu — May 16

Popstar is a hilarious and beloved musical mockumentary starring SNL and Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum Andy Samberg. Conner is an aging popstar who left his friends and collaborators by the wayside on his rise to stardom. Now, he wants to make a documentary about his life and career, but with his latest album bombing, the captures may instead capture his downfall.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)

The 31st film in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe and the third in the Ant-Man franchise, Quantumania sees Scott and Hope travelling into the Quantum Realm, where they meet an assortment of new allies and foes, including the mysterious and powerful Kang.

One of the best new streaming movies this week comes from Focus Features and is available exclusively on Peacock. The film follows Inez as she kidnaps six-year-old her son from foster care to reconnect him to his roots. The free-spirit finds herself grappling with her sense of home, identity, and stability in a rapidly changing New York City.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

Mubi — May 19

Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman star in this bizarre and haunting film from The Favorite director Yorgos Lanthimos, one of the best new streaming movies you’ll want to check out this week. Doctor Steven Murphy’s idyllic, sanitized life is upset when a fatherless youth infiltrates his household, slowly inserting himself into Mrphy’s affairs. The boy’s intentions soon reveal themselves, threatening the order and safety of Murphy’s family.

Parasite (2019)

Max — May 19

This Academy Award best picture winner remains one of the best films of the last decade. The Korean drama follows a poor family tying its fate to a richer household, slowly revealing the many injustices inherent in their social stratification. As the two families grow closer, their fates intertwine and barrel toward an inevitably disastrous end.

White Men Can’t Jump (2023)

Hulu — May 19

A remake of the 1992 sports comedy of the same name starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, this Hulu original film is an update on the story of American race relations. Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow star as two ballers with seemingly nothing in common. That changes as they bond over their shared love of the game.
