Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided fans with a positive update on Luis Severino’s injury recovery, as the 29-year-old right-hander prepares to return to the rotation and make his 2023 season debut.

Severino, who has not pitched this year, is expected to take the mound for his first start of the campaign on Sunday against the Reds, Boone announced Wednesday, via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com

It will be the final game of a three-game set in Cincinnati, though the starters have not been named for Friday’s or Saturday’s tilts at the Great American Ball Park.

Severino last pitched for New York during the ALCS against the Astros, during which he surrendered three runs and struck out six batters across 5 1/3 innings of work.

Injuries have slowed down the once-promising career of Severino, though when he’s healthy, he’s been sharp on the mound. Since 2019, the two-time All-Star has managed to throw just 120 innings, including 102 last season.

In 2022, Severino made 19 starts, his most since 2018, and logged a 3.18 ERA with 112 strikeouts.

He has yet to take the mound in 2023 while dealing with a lat issue that he incurred during spring training. He pitched 3 1/3 innings for the Somerset Patriots, the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate, on Tuesday, surrendering two runs and striking out three.

Severino’s return is set to come just shortly after fellow Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German was ejected for using an illegal foreign substance in Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays. German is facing a 10-game suspension but has the right to appeal.
